First Class Students From Summer 2019

This post has been contributed by Dr Yvonne Jacobs Associate Dean: Assessments and Student Lifecycle, Undergraduate Laws.

This summer we have eight outstanding students who have been awarded a First class degree. They represent the following countries:

Our outstanding students share their experiences of studying for their degree.

Robin Ho Ming Teck studied at Brickfields Asia College in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

‘The #UOLWorldClass experience is one that I will reminisce about for years to come. When I started on this journey, I began with the end in mind – to graduate with a First Class Honours, fuelled by the ultimate desire of a child wanting to make his parents proud. Studies aside, I was actively involved in extra-curricular activities as I’ve participated in national and international mooting competitions. To say that I’ve never thought about throwing in the towel would be a blatant lie as there were bleak and frustrating moments where I’ve had to reflect on the reason why I’ve set foot on this journey in the first place. At the same time, I can only attribute my success to the University of London as well as my lecturers in Brickfields Asia College for constantly inspiring and challenging me to attain greater heights in my academic endeavour. To beautifully sum up this journey in the words of A.A Milne, author of Winnie the Pooh: “Rivers know this: there is no hurry. We shall get there some day.” To my fellow juniors, you will get there one day and you will make it through!’

Wen Yie Cheong also studied at Brickfields Asia College in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

‘UOL gave me world class education and it’s finally my time to graduate. With such a prestigious school, you can achieve your goal in life.’

Wen Bin Leow studied at the Advance Tertiary College, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Like almost every other person, I would thank my family, friends, lecturers, and the institution for their gentle care and valuable support. I would also attribute my achievement to the unseen blessings of Avalokiteśvara, Perceiver of the World’s Sounds. The midnight oil was worth burning, and I would recall the nights where there were nothing else but soft flutters of the turning pages and reposeful chirps of crickets, with occasional loud vehicles speeding across the vacant streets. Getting a First Class award is a recognition that the University of London gave me for the efforts that made me who I am today and the rest of my days that are yet to come before I take that supreme journey from being to nothingness’.

Ashanika Nidumi Wijerathne studied at CfPS Law School, Colombo, Sri Lanka

‘Pain is temporary but a world First class LLB from the University of London is forever. My Alma mater was St’Bridget’s Convent Colombo 7. Firstly I would like to thank my god almighty, my parents and my brother. Next at CfPS Law School Mr Saliya Pieris sir, Mrs Manouri Pieris madame, together with the management and staff, the honourable lecture panel, fellow students seniors, juniors at CfPS Law School who immensley supported, moulded, guided me to get the very first, First class honours from CfPS Law School. The University of London’s precise subject guides, textbooks, essential readings, lecture pluses made me the person who I am today. With the current painful situation that occured in Sri Lanka, having to write exams was tough to make up the mindset as well but the CfPS Law School and lecturers guidance helped me throughout. I hope to achieve the best in future endeavours as well. Thank you and May God Bless you all.’

Avani Wannakuwatte studied at the Royal Institute of Colombo, Sri Lanka

Anna Wasmeier studied at the University of Passau, Germany

‘Studying with University of London has been a formidable experience for me, opening up a wide spectrum of professional avenues. I am grateful to all those amazing people who accompanied and endorsed me throughout this time.’

Our final two First class students studied on the graduate-entry LLB:

Catherine Woollard from UK/Belgium studied independently

‘I am over the moon about my result. The University of London LLB has been a challenging but highly enjoyable experience; I am already applying the knowledge gained in my work. I found it a high quality and professionally managed degree programme throughout, both in terms of the academic side, with excellent course design, selection of materials and revision and study support sessions at the University, and the administrative side, with very efficient organisation and quick, clear response to enquiries.’

Wayne Chow Tsz Fung studied at the School of Professional Education and Executive Development (SPEED) in Hong Kong

‘It was an arduous journey throughout my three years of studies on the LLB, as it required determination to revise the materials and case law after work. I would like to thank all my outstanding lecturers and UOL for their endless support and valuable resources during my journey, also my families and my loved one for being supportive. Achieving a First class in LLB has opened up a great deal of opportunities in my future career and the course itself has strengthened my ability to think critically and most importantly to acquire the legal knowledge that is useful in your life. A big thanks to UOL for offering such a challenging course and I do believe that with determination you could achieve it as well!’

Congratulations to all of our First class students from summer 2018-9. For all of you who have successfully completed your degree this year, I hope that you are proud of your achievement and take time for a well-earned celebration with your family, friends and anyone else who has supported you and contributed to your success. For those of you who are still on your journey towards completing your degree I hope that the experiences shared here have provided inspiration and guidance.

    1. Hi Kirk, as it is currently summer time and we have students leaving the programme due to being awarded the degree and new students registering, it is not possible for us to give an accurate number of students at this time.
